Game Jams, Charity Bundles, and More!

With Fight or Fright! out, let's talk about some of the things I've done with it since launch, and what you can expect next from Wait, Roll That Again!

Kia ora!

It’s been pretty full on week since Fight or Fright! came out, and I’m stoked that people have been picking up copies and enjoying it!

I’m happy to have been up to lots of exciting stuff since we last spoke, so today’s issue of the Wait, Roll That Again newsletter will cover:

  1. Fight or Fright! in the Disc 2 Game Jam

  2. My Entry to the KiwiRPG 20 Minute Adventure Jam

  3. Fight or Fright! in the Games for Sudan bundle

  4. Other cool links like the Rascal News pledge drive, season 4 of Dice Exploder, and more.

If you want to check out Fight or Fright!, you can find it here on itch.io, and there are plenty of free community copies available as well!

The DISC 2 TTRPG Jam

A disc-like circle is joined by the text that reads THE DISC 2 TTRPG JAM

Ken Lowery, designer of games like No-Tell Motel and VOID 1680, ran an exciting game jam over the last few months inspiring designers to make a DISC 2 for their games - the sort of extra features you’d see included on the second disc of a movie you’d buy. Behind-the-scenes, interviews, designer commentaries, that sort of thing!

I loved the idea of this jam, and when I had some extra time after Fight or Fright! was done, I decided to submit it with a DISC 2 of my own!

In Fight or Fright!’s DISC 2 Zip File, you’ll find the following content:

  • A Design Essay about designing for Feelings and Moments

  • Deleted Scenes - mechanics that didn’t make it into the final game

  • The first ever playtest document, as hear playtested on the third episode of Wait, Roll That Again!

  • The first version of the game designed with the Fight/Fright dice pool system.

Here’s a preview of one of the ‘deleted scenes’ included:

Balanced Dice

After making the change to the Fight/Fright dice pool system in V0.0, I had an idea for expressing one of the themes I had thought of, which was how characters were to balance their approach to their challenges, not indulging too far in either of the dice pools. I called this Balanced Dice, and the text from the document reads as follows:

When the dice are split evenly between the two pools, your character has balanced their heroism and heart.

To find out what happened to that mechanic, pick up a copy of Fight or Fright! and check out the Disc 2 folder!

The KiwiRPG 20 Minute Adventure Game Jam

During KiwiRPG week, an awesome little jam was organised to create an element of play that could be completed in 20 minutes, so I decided to write up an NPC for your Fight or Fright! game.

You can check out The Candy Peddler, a free NPC who introduces a way to change costumes during your adventure, and may give you candy rewards for completing quests, or betray you to seize your hard-earned candy!

Games for Sudan

A poster that reads GAMES 4 SUDAN - RAISING FUNDS FOR THE SUDAN EMERGENCY APPEAL. The images of 41 ttrpg covers decorate the poster

Due to the destructive conflict in Sudan, and the desperate humanitarian crisis emerging, ttrpg creator @TTRPGifs has created a charity bundle of 40 amazing games to support the Sudan Emergency Appeal.

Games included in the bundle include Godkiller, Creation Myths, Anamnesis, and Fight or Fright!

Other Stuff!

  • Dice Exploder is gearing up for it’s Fourth Season campaign, and you should go follow it before it launches over on Backerkit.

  • Rascal News, the tabletop news platform, is running it’s first pledge drive.

  • I loved the latest episode of the Design Doc podcast, which always balances being hilarious and incredibly insightful
